Dead Man’s Cell Phone
Dramaturgy Note
At the present time of writing this note, there are 8.2 billion human beings on earth. The United States alone clocks in at 333.3 million human beings. Yet somehow, with this many people on the planet, we frequently feel lonely and isolated. On top of all of this lies our cellphone. In our very fingertips is a device that contains seemingly infinite information. At the same time, this device engorges us in deceit and ostracism. It connects us, yet distances us. This play and production intends to explore the experience of this reality. The very same one that allows many of you readers to even read this note.
Ruhl’s Dead Man’s Cell Phone explores a younger, but certainly still developed, version of our current digital society. Today, it encourages us to reflect upon our own quickly progressing technological world and its consequences. A world that many members of our community have been around for their entire lives. An unavoidable world presented through one of humanities archaic rituals, theater.
