‘Deathtrap’

Director’s Statement

Madelein Hanson - Director

Ky Daisey - Director

When I was looking for a play for Center Stage to put on this semester, I was specifically looking out for a few key themes and events: murder, mystery, and cleverness. I was lucky enough to find Deathtrap, a play full of all of those things, plus added societal and theatrical commentary. I knew I wanted to put this play on, and I was so incredibly lucky to have Ky on board to help me through my first time directing in any capacity. Deathtrap is a play that forces the audience to engage with every line of dialogue and try to understand the motivations and reasonings of each character beyond the surface, something that we should do more in everyday life. I had so much fun working on this piece with the cast and crew and I look forward to how it will evolve over these performances!

- Madelein Hanson

“Though this isn’t my first time in a directorial role, this is my first time directing a full-length play. I set out to support Madelein’s original vision for this piece, and together we have only started to chip away at what this team is capable of. While we workshop this piece, I am striving to push our actors and designers past what should happen and have them show us and all of you what can happen, how pushing and pulling the boundaries of the world we create can serve this production. I have had a blast exploring this piece with this cast so far–they each have challenged my perception and I can’t wait to see where it can go moving forward!”
