Hurricane Diane

Dramaturgy Note

This has been a wonderful whirlwind experience working on Hurricane Diane. My intention with this piece’s dramaturgy was to tap into the intersectionality that hallmarks this piece and separates it from its work of origin, The Bacchae. Hurricane Diane is about our current environmental crisis and queer identity among other things, but more importantly it is about how they intersect. With my dramaturgical display as well as my research for the show I attempted to display this important interaction. The art on the stage was built by our dramaturgical team and is made of the waste created by the cast, crew, and director over the course of the play’s process. Each piece is decorated with an array of symbols that reflect the queerness of the people in the show. It is our intention with these pieces to demonstrate how giving into the natural state of things such as the environment and queerness not only creates beauty within our lives but that it is ultimately essential.
